More about usBoth partners check eligibility, prepare age and address proof, file the application or notice before the Marriage Officer or Registrar, and then appear with witnesses for solemnisation and registration. The marriage certificate is issued after registration.
Age proof and address proof for both partners, passport-size photographs, affidavits on marital status and nationality, and ID proof of the witnesses. A divorce decree or death certificate is needed if either partner was married before.
Under the Special Marriage Act there is a mandatory 30-day notice period, so it cannot be done in one day. Where both partners are Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist, the marriage can be solemnised by ceremony and registered quickly, often within a very short time, depending on the Registrar’s schedule.
A court marriage usually means a marriage solemnised before the Marriage Officer under the Special Marriage Act. A registered marriage is one already performed by religious ceremony and then entered in the government register. Both give a legally valid marriage certificate.
The groom must be at least 21 years old and the bride at least 18.
